Gritters out as snow falls in parts of Greater Manchester amid weather warnings

Parts of Greater Manchester have woken up to wintry scenes this morning with snow falling in some areas. Oldham Council gritters are currently at work across Saddleworth, where heavy snow has fallen so far today (February 8).

Images show heavy snow has covered Denshaw this morning, while key roads in the area are being prepared for traffic. A spokesperson for Oldham Council posted on X: “It’s looking a bit snowy up in Saddleworth.

“Our gritter Frank Gritwell is currently out spreading salt on the A62 up at Bleak Hey Nook. If you are out and about today please take care.”

The Met Office expects wintry weather to continue in Saddleworth today. Heavy snow is currently forecast for Uppermill until around 3pm this afternoon, when it will make way for rain. Follow our live blog here.

Meanwhile, snow could continue to fall over higher ground on the moors until the early hours of Friday morning, according to the Met Office. Other areas of Greater Manchester have seen sleet so far this morning, although some flurries of snow could still fall in parts of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside.

A yellow weather warning for snow is in force across Greater Manchester for 24 hours from 6am today. Parts of the Pennines and Peak District have been covered by an amber warning for snow, which begins at midday and lasts until 6pm.
