Gallery Oldham is excited by young people’s take on the world, we want to create opportunities for discussion, exploration and creation of new work and change.
As part of our young artists’ program we are on the hunt for eight female identifying* young people who would like to be featured in our new partnership with the National Gallery Masterpiece on Tour Programme. We are thrilled to announce in September 2021 we will be host to Héléne Rouart in Her Father’s Study by one of the world’s most renowned artists Edgar Degas. Alongside Degas’ work we will be featuring a multitude of artworks from the Gallery Oldham collection as well as works from regional current artists such as Tina Ramos-Ekongo and Saima Rasheed. The theme of this exhibition is on Women in Art as objects, sitters and artists.
The Masterpiece on tour exhibition is made possible through the generous support of The Christie’s. Beginning in Oldham the Masterpiece tour will continue to Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside in Haverfordwest/Pembrokeshire and then to The Prescott Gallery in Kirkby.
Opportunity
We are looking for eight young artists to professionally exhibit a piece of their work, each chosen artist will be welcomed to use our studio space for the creation of pieces, there will be networking opportunities for each artist,
1 – 1 mentoring support from gallery staff and the opportunity to form a community of young exhibiting artists. We have a small fee of £50 per artist to support the creation of artworks.
We are specifically interested in hearing from young people who are usually under-represented in the art world including but not limited to young people of colour, neurodivergent, those with mental health challenges, those who identify as LGBTQIA+ etc. and living in the Oldham area.
We are looking for new pieces of work inspired by the theme ‘Women in Art’. This can be your take on the topic and in any format from fine art to digital, photography to sculpture. We’re interested in seeing how this topic inspires new generations of artists in Oldham.
How to apply for a commission
To apply for one of the commissions we want to hear your idea – this can be in writing, via video (no longer than 5 minutes) or a zoom call.
It should include:
– Your ideas
– Why you would like to apply
– Which artform you would like to respond in (Dance, Drama, Music, Art etc.)
Application deadline: Monday 28th June, 5pm
Chosen artists contacted: Thursday 1st July
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply:
– You must be 16 – 25
– We welcome applications from female identifying artists including trans and non-binary young people
– Live, work or study in the Oldham Borough
– Be able to commit to the creation of new artwork by the last week in August 2021
– Have a UK bank account
