Saddleworth Museum and Gallery
The Museum stands in a beautiful and historic location beside the Huddersfield Canal in the village of Uppermill, nestled in the hills in the middle of the area known as Saddleworth, an old Yorkshire Parish with its own identity.
Uppermill is a busy, thriving village with lovely canal towpath walks, many small independent shops and plenty of places to eat & drink.
The museum galleries tell the story of the people who have created Saddleworth’s landscape and character. This is done in a thoroughly modern way within the carefully restored fabric of a building that still retains the character you would expect from a building dated 1862.
One of our hidden treasures is undoubtedly our archive. We have one of the single richest sources of local history to be found in the north of England. There are maps photographs, deeds, wills, census returns and Parish records. The earliest date back to the late 1500’s.
