You can always see selections from our art collections on display at Gallery Oldham. They are used in temporary exhibitions and on permanent display throughout the building. Some items are on display in Oldham Civic Centre and in Oldham’s libraries too. But did you know that we also make loans to other exhibitions across the UK and beyond?
This summer we have loaned one of the star items from our collection to the British Museum. The exhibition Feminine Power: the divine to the demonic runs until 25 September. And the painting Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysess by John William Waterhouse is one of the star attractions of this high profile exhibition. Of course, if you don’t make it to see the painting in London then you’ll find Circe back on display in Oldham next year.
Another painting currently on loan is Lilac by Glynn Philpot. This delightful painting features in an exhibition exploring the work and legacy of this fascinating artist. The exhibition Glyn Philpot: Flesh and Spirit is on display at Pallant House in Chichester until 23 October.
You will also find two of Gallery Oldham’s paintings on display in Cornwall this summer. Low Tide Work by Cornelius Wagner is at Falmouth Art Gallery in the exhibition Polperro – Cornwall’s Forgotten Art Centre until 18 June. And the poetically named The tender grace of a day that is dead will never come back to me by Walter Langley features in an exhibition marking the centenary of this artist’s death. Painting Between the Tides: Walter Langley (1852-1922) is at Penlee House in Penzance until 1 October.
Finally, if you are travelling further afield, an Irish masterpiece from our collections can be seen at The Hunt Museum in Limerick. Artist Sean Keating was inspired by the building of a hydro-electric scheme in 1920s Ireland to produce the painting Nights Candles are Burnt Out which celebrated the birth of an independent industrial nation. His striking painting was recently featured in this fascinating article.
